Unlocking the Mysteries of Genetics
CHEO has seized the opportunity to enhance the genetics literacy of Ontario healthcare providers by funding the Genetic Education Centre – Knowledge for Ontario (GEC-KO). With increasing knowledge of the role of genetics in common disorders and rapid technology advances, non-genetics specialists will play a more significant role in the delivery of genetic medicine. GEC-KO is the legacy of former chief of Genetics, Dr. Judith Allanson, and Toronto family physician, Dr. June Carroll.
GEC-KO will enable development, collection, dissemination and evaluation of evidence-based genetics educational materials. As a supporting infrastructure for genetics education, GEC-KO will facilitate translation of research into healthcare. Most importantly, for the first time in Canada, GEC-KO will provide the impetus to build genetics competencies in primary care, specialty medicine, and other health professions.
